If you are reading this, you are likely to be of a certain age …. You can now reflect back on your ancestors, while you enjoy watching the young generation growing up - all too fast.
Are you the keeper of stories of your ancestors and your own generation? You may be the only person who can tell these stories, but you think no one is interested nowadays or willing to listen.
Did we take enough interest when we were young, in stories of the older generation?
Invariably, we now wish we had been more attentive, listened, taken down details of relatives, events, dates, kept records, letters. Much is lost forever ……..
However, you may now be at the top of the family line, like a fairy on a Christmas tree! YOU are now in a privileged position - what a treasure you hold! …. Are these wonderful memories going to die with you? Or would you like to pass them on if you could only get started?
Where to start?
DIY - yes – DO IT YOURSELF! Get PEN & PAPER:
Take the first step: Begin today! Sequence of events does not matter at this stage. Write as you recall events, people, dates….
Headings below will jostle your memory if you run out of ideas. Write about yourself, your parents, grandparents, any of the older generation.
Roots:
Where did your family come from ….origin of your family’s surname county/country…. Is it spelt differently now? What do you know of background history of your family?
Grandparents:
Names and any important dates you know - birth, marriage, death etc. Describe your grandparents and give details of other family ancestors that you can remember hearing about….
Parents:
Names and important dates. What was your mother’s maiden name? Describe your mother and father. Write about their appearance, personalities, work and style of living … their outlook on life … Memorabilia e.g. letters, jewellery, invoices, tickets…
Biography / Autobiography:
Date of birth, birthplace and full name…. names and birth dates of any brothers and sisters. What was good / bad about placement in family … brother or sister had most in common with… where did you grow up … describe home … any pets… memorable incidents/ accidents/ pranks. Did you speak another language… your household chores / jobs… helping on farm or family business, with relative …….
Childhood:
Write about what you did as a family during the early years…. … distance to school….. favourite teacher ….. favourite subjects…. sports … other activities in school … school trips … incidents ….. pranks …. your best friend …. visiting relatives …. visitors /relatives to your home …religious ceremonies … holidays ... moving house ... games... fights... work /chores at home ... hobbies... interests... music... books … religious practices….. food likes & dislikes ….treats…family rules. Did you ever break the rules? Finances at home, pocket money, rewards…. Describe the worst time in your family … something that happened ... death of relative ... sickness in the family … etc the best times… joys of childhood …
Neighbourhood:
Near neighbours …. local characters…. social customs and practices … local memorable events … local disasters … fun & games ….
Growing Up:
Second level education ….. clothes when growing up… entertainment … dancing …. films. Who influenced you most? How did you get along with your parents? First date? … moving away from home… where did you go… what did you do…. best & worst thing about leaving home …..
Career:
Further education /training / opportunities. Your work career, moves, promotions, leave… job change …. Job loss .. moving round ….. working abroad ….Any special projects / assignments … awards
Spouse / Partner:
How did you meet … Age … First impressions… Courtship… Describe details of your wedding …pictures… clothes … church … meal … music … where to on honeymoon… first home … early married life ….. family visits …..in-laws …. first neighbours …
Children:
Names & dates of birth. What were they like as babies, children, young adults… What did you enjoy about raising them… What was difficult…Did you raise your children as you were raised yourself… If you raised them differently, in what way … what did you emulate from your young days ..difficulties .. joys .. sickness … What’s missing today … Most precious aspect of rearing your family…
Interests:
Describe clubs, groups, organizations you may
have joined. Did you attend courses or
classes… travel … politics …… parish
community …… spiritual
New Generation:
How did you feel when you first learned you
were to become a grandparent? …. stories
about the grandchildren…
Retirement:
What now…hobbies …new found interests in later life…. travel… health issues… family .. sadness …. separation.. grief .. coping. philosophy of life…what are your values … important things in life….
Miscellaneous:
Your own personality, hopes, dreams. Social /political / economic factors that impacted on your family /personal situation …. best book you ever read… greatest adventure… your closest friend.. most wonderful sight… any other best ……… most beautiful …. favourite … most precious memory.. … greatest personal achievement in life… regrets ….. What other bits you would dare to share ?
Getting together with other family members also helps, as one memory borrows another. In the end, you could have enough material for a book.
