The Sadness is Palpable

In the 1911 Census, the last before the war, the population of Lucan was 919 souls!

Just imagine the trauma of 32 young men from Lucan of that time, being killed in the space of four years, 1914 – 1918.

Most of us who have lived all our lives in Lucan knew nothing much about it even though many of us, without realising it, knew several of the survivors, and spoke with them regularly. It is generally accepted that the horrors of WWI were so great that few could ever bring themselves to speak of it, even with their own families.

Back in 1997 when I had the privilege of meeting 96 year old Christopher Ledwidge, and bringing readers details of his lifetime through Lucan Newsletter, it was the first time that any mention of The Great War or anyone local who had taken part in it, was mentioned in the then 30 year old weekly publication.

It was only after that, we received old photographs and details of our forgotten young men. Luckily, some of it was in time for ‘Treasures of Lucan’, but two previous history volumes had been published since 1991, without any mention of this great tragedy.

It was bad enough all these young lives being lost, but how it became such an unspeakable part of our history is beyond comprehension.

You wonder how those who returned settled back into an Ireland that, in their absence, had also changed utterly as a result of the 1916 rebellion. Many were ostracised in their own communities.

This “story wiped from the slate of the national consciousness”, as one TV documentary put it, must never again be forgotten!
