The X-Factor was in Lucan long before the Grimes twins appeared on our screens!

first communion class

These little boys made their First Holy Communion in Lucan back in 1936. The picture was taken in the grounds of Presentation Convent – the boys would have been pupils there until they completed First Class, after which they attended Lucan Boys National School, then in the Church Yard.

Back: Kit Kelly, Willie Lee, Liam McCormack, Paul Martin, Davy Bevin, Paddy Barr, Paddy Foley, ??
Front: Francie Condron, Joe Cullen, Dessie Green, ? Byrne, Ben Howlett, Sean Kilduff, Canon Ryan, Fr. Hook, Louis Madden, Jimmy Rankin, Hugh Dignam, Tom Collins, Kevin Condron.

Canon Ryan was the Parish Priest of Clondalkin Parish to which Lucan belonged until 1953, and Fr. Hook was the local Curate.

And what's it to do with the heading you might say!
Well the two little boys in the white suits, at either end of the front row – Francie Condron and Kevin Condron are granduncle and grandfather respectively, to John and Edward Grimes, of X Factor fame. You could say that the twins didn't pick their fashion sense off the ground!

Best of luck to the younger generation, John and Edward.

Thank you to Paddy Foley who sent in this picture, and also to Peter Brady who supplied the names. If anyone knows the couple of names missing please contact Lucan Newsletter or mary@lucannewsletter.ie
