You held the blue umbrella firmly
Twirling it ever so slowly as you set off
In the rain
To your school for the Disco –
Your first social evening
In your first year at secondary school.
The green-grey skirt no more than a whisper over long, long legs.
Stockings with their satin bows
Twinkled under the street lights
And your ‘Ug’ boots
– so up to date – so 2008
The perfect foil for all the rest
Although I have to admit I wouldn’t have picked them in a hundred years.
The buttoned cardigan tight under unformed breasts
Gave a shapely outline,
Older than your thirteen years.
Green eyes shone with childish innocence
And anticipation, as you set off in the rain.
Your lovely long brown hair curled in a fringe before
Cascading round your shoulders like a mermaid
Fresh from the ocean of youth.
